Christian Fathers and Our Children (The Next Generation)
Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 2:12-25; 8: 1-3
Passage Key Words: Eli, sons, not listen, father’s rebuke, restraint
Topical Key Words: godly legacy, disobedient children, father’s restraint
Many fathers qualify as responsible providers, good husbands, respectable citizens and excellent employees. Where their daunting challenges arise is convincing and directing their children to choose godly behaviors and lifestyles. Eli’s sons undermined his spiritual office, service and legacy by their misconducts and immorality. Although he warned his sons, he failed to restrain them. Samuel who served under Eli and perhaps grieved over the misbehaviors and unfortunate outcomes of Eli’s sons had a similar disappointing experience with his sons. When he was old and less involved, his sons chose and acted contrary to his legacy.
May God give us the wisdom and courage to devote the time and resources necessary to influence our children’s choices.
