Cautionary Examples

The Apostle Peter (1 Peter 4: 8) describes the Devil as a “roaring lion looking for someone to devour”—an angelic being and our soul’s mortal enemy always waiting and watching for opportunities to take advantage of our faults and missteps in order to destroy our testimonies for Jesus. Therefore, Peter warns us to remain “self-controlled and alert” in order to “resist” the devil and “stand firm” in our faith and obedience to God.

The Apostle Paul provides cautionary examples of those who erred and fell by “setting [their] hearts on evil things,” “indulging “in pagan revelry,” “sexual immorality,” and grumbling against God’s hand and work in their lives. “If you think you are standing firm, be careful” because temptation is never far away. With every temptation, there is always a choice to obey God or not. Obedience is our victory.

May God deliver us from the temptations of life.
