Heavenly Calling in Ungodly Settings

Bible Passage: 1 Kings 18: 1-15 (NIV)

Obadiah worked for two ungodly supervisors, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, under hostile work conditions. Ahab did everything to discourage and undermine the faith and worship of God and Jezebel killed those who opposed them. In the midst of his service, Obadiah still found time and space to support godly causes—saving the lives of 100 prophets. Similarly, Nehemiah and Queen Esther serving under hostile environments and difficult work conditions gave themselves to the service of God’s purpose.

Regardless of the circumstances or environments we find ourselves, the writer of Hebrews (12:1-2) encourages us to “fix our eyes on Jesus [God's calling]” like Obadiah, Nehemiah and Esther so that we don’t “grow weary and lose heart” in our Christian living and service to God.

May God give us a love for Him that surpasses whatever challenges life brings upon us.
