Sensational Controversies

A college student got into a group debate that produced more ill-will, dissatisfaction and dissention than he wanted. When the dust settled, he realized that he had missed what God wanted to do.

Have you ever been caught in a religious or controversial debate and wondered why? Or, did you stand to the side while impatiently waiting to speak up? Did you feel like blurting out an opinion that you felt might clear up misconceptions and correct errors before the class or group dispersed? Could you discern if your urgency and restlessness came from divine inspiration and revelation or otherwise?

Some controversial debates promote stife and disention rather than godliness or peace. Because the Bible teaches that the “lack of [true] knowledge” destroys (Hosea 4:6), our goal should be to promote the knowledge of God and not our intellectual competence. If allow it, worldly knowledge could provoke pride within (1 Corinthians 8:1) and pride produces more contention and discord. As Christians, if we do not have godly revelation we are better off overlooking the invitation to debate. Therefore, the Apostle Paul instructed his young student, Timothy, to shun academic debates that promote pride, false knowledge and intellect exhibitionism. These undermine faith in Jesus Christ, love and godly living.

Not all debates are worth their demands.
God changes hearts and minds not our arguments and debates.
