Balancing Ministry and Work (Part I)

Bible Passage: 1 Peter 4: 7-11

Passage Key Words: clear minded, self-controlled, serve others, faithfully, God’s grace

Topical Key Words: work, ministry, service, balance

Many employees in the helping/healing professions treat work as an extension of ministry.  Pastors, missionaries and relief workers, for example, often view work and ministry as the same.  But the majority of Christians work in fields where work provides very little opportunities for ministry.  Obadiah (1 Kings 18) and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 2) faced slim ministry opportunities because their workplaces were hostile to their faith and beliefs.  Nevertheless, both used their professional connections, skills, talents, access and resources to serve others within the workplace, community and nation.  Their unique knowledge, assets and position gave them special opportunities to serve others.  Though inconvenient, they like the Good Samaritan partnered with God to meet the present human needs for Christ’s sake, even while fulfilling their work responsibilities.

May God continue to increase our opportunities for ministry through work.
