Balancing Ministry and Work (Part II—Unbalanced Example)

Bible Passage: Haggai 1:1-11

Passage Key Words: Lord’s house, ruin, you, living, paneled houses

Topical Key Words: work, ministry, service, unbalanced

Prophet Haggai preached against pursuing temporal gains while procrastinating about God’s business and eternal rewards.  He said that while we might have and accumulate more we would always end up with little fulfillments.  Jesus gave the parable of such example.  The man gave God’s business and eternal rewards no thought but expended all his time on material pursuits and accumulations (Luke 12: 13-21).  His desire to acquire more dominated his thoughts.  As he expanded his plans, he died suddenly and left everything.  Similarly, the story is told about a man who practically slept at his office, had no family and did little outside work.  One day, he died at work and coworkers discovered him in the morning.  The news spread and before the day ended, someone called to know when the job vacancy would be posted.

May God give us the wisdom to devote more time to that which is eternal.
