If you have job, you perhaps got a call one day, interviewed and got the job! You probably felt special because your employer chose you from among the many who applied. With excitement, you shared the news with everyone who played a role, and thanked God. Come first day on the job, you used excellent performance to show that your call and selection was worth your employer’s time and resource commitments.

Throughout the first week, you sometimes came to work early and stayed late. Your diligence, dedication and effort were your strategy for achieving peak performance. Occasionally, you took work home and research information on weekends, without overtime pay, to gain approval and respect.

Some coworkers welcomed your contribution, and a few did not. However, you persevered because your aim is to be ready for the next job, position or career change, when the opportunity comes.

More important than any employer’s call and selection is God’s calling and election. As God’s creation, each of us is unique, special, called and chosen. God wants our relationship with Him closer than that with any employer, and our desire for intimacy with Him exceptional and authentic. Our utmost calling and election should come from our relationship with God rather than our contribution to the employer’s bottom line.

May God rekindle our excitement and glow in Christ over and above our workplace relationships and ambitions.
