Workplace Meditation Week 6: The Martha Hectic Workload and Workweek
Workplace Meditation
The Martha Hectic Workload and Workweek
Bible Passage: Luke 10: 38-42 (NIV)
Passage Key Words: “Distracted by all the preparations,” “left me to do the work,” “worried and upset”
Topical Key Words: overworked, underpaid, unappreciated, lack of support
One single man lived to work on his job and one day, died there. Once removed from his desk, a few people called to know how soon his employer would advertise the vacated position. Do you know a Martha workhorse at your office: running from project to project, fixing everybody’s problems, satisfying disgruntled clients, addressing difficult issues, attending emergency meetings, negotiating with difficult coworkers and doing tasks that others would not do? All these are note-worthy deeds but they are problematic when at the expense and disregard for God’s fellowship and service, personal health and family life. While the productivity, praise and accolades may entrap us, we should resist the trap of Martha busyness, workload and workweek. The Martha career could undermine our spiritual and physical health and lifestyle. In Martha’s case, Jesus called on her to choose and spend more time on what “will not be taken away!” For every earthly job would eventually be lost, due to job/career change or relocation decisions, downsizing, retirement, or death. Therefore, Jesus cautions never to sacrifice our spiritual life for earthly goals!
May our modern lives not consume and overshadow our spiritual mission and vision as we seek God’s help to find and focus on the “one thing” that will bring us true meaning and joy in this life, and thereafter.
