Praying Proactively

Bible Passage: Matthew 26: 36-46, 69-75 (NIV)

Passage Key Words: watch, pray, temptation, body, weak

Topical Key Words: self-confidence, prayerlessness, personal call-to-pray, corporate intercessory prayer

During his final days on earth, Jesus warned his disciples about the fierce trials and temptations coming to them.  Therefore, he invited them to pray with him and for themselves.  He warning implied that only through prayer could they overcome temptation and secure deliverance and it was the best option.  Because they neither understood his warnings and desperation nor the magnitude of the challenges facing them, they gave in to their bodily desire for comfort rather than the call-to-pray.  In particular, Peter, confident that he could withstand any approaching test without enduring in prayer, did not persevere in prayer.  When the testing storm came through, they all ran away and denied Jesus—in thoughts, words, omissions and deeds.  Jesus, on the other hand, continued in prayer until the final hour and overcame his temptations.

May God give us the power to overcome the flesh and pray whenever impressed by the Holy Spirit’s call-to-pray.
