Pain, Suffering, Temptation, Submission & Prayer

Bible Passage: Hebrews 5: 7-10 (NIV)

Jesus’ greatest temptations started at the Garden of Gethsemane. He was “overwhelmed with sorrow” (Mark 14:34) but prayed until he yielded himself to God’s will. The Apostle Paul likened his “torment” to “a thorn” in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). Leah’s suffering came through her marriage; Daniel’s, his coworkers; Elijah’s, his service to others; David’s, his children and political office. By yielding to God’s will and grace, continued obedience and prayer these individuals turned their suffering, pain and weaknesses into spiritual and ministry advantage.

They were tempted to doubt, retreat and disobey God. Temptations brought suffering; suffering, pain; pain, tears and faith testing. As they watched and prayed “without ceasing,” they came to know and believe that God cared, heard and walked with them. That knowledge sustained them throughout their journeys.

May God give us the inner faith, hope and love for Him sufficient to withstand the pains and storms of life.
