Saving Time

Bible Passage: Romans 13: 11-14 (NIV)

Passage Key Words: “hour,” “wake up,” “night,” “darkness,” “light,” “daytime”

Topical Key Words: daylight, saving, time

Setting our clocks forward (spring) and backward (fall) to give us more daylight for recreation, shopping and other after-work engagements is a practice in many western countries.  Although we maintain the 24-hour day, it changes our national bedtime schedules to give us more time for outside activities.  Spiritually, Jesus counseled us to change our lifetime priorities and schedules while we are still alive (daylight) in order to serve God more.  Because when death comes (nighttime), there will be nothing more to do.

The writer of Ecclesiastes (12) taught the same, “Remember your Creator…before…the dust [our bodies] returns to the ground it came from and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”  Because our earthly “time is short” (1 Corinthians 7:29-31), the Bible encourages us to make “the most of every opportunity” to live holy, share with others and serve God (Ephesians 5: 13-17).

May God guide us to know and number our lifetime days so that we may live with wisdom.
