The Fear and Resentment of The Overqualified Coworker

Bible Passage: Acts 19: 23-41 (NIV)

Passage Key Words: silversmith, craftsmen, uproar, Paul, set out

Topical Key Words: Achievement, overqualified, resentment, fear, conflict

Apostle Paul’s critics feared that his evangelistic success threatened their jobs.  So, they gathered and stirred a mob and the resulting riot chased Paul out of town.  Similarly, Jesus’ accusers felt threatened by his knowledge, success and public influence.  To eliminate the threat, secure their positions and hold on power, they condemned him to death.

One new employee considered “overqualified” by his supervisor and peers had his position eliminated.  Those who are insecure about their jobs or positions because of more productive colleagues are likely to act in ungodly ways.  In the extreme, King Saul drove himself insane because he resented and feared David’s success.

May God give us the grace and humility to imitate exemplar coworkers rather than compromise and fight them.
